Alan Pickering is President of BESTrustees and represents BEST as chairman or co￾trustee on a variety of pension schemes and with assets under management of up to £13bn.

Alan has also served as a non-executive director of the Pensions Regulator. He is a past Chairman of the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF, now known as the PLSA) and the European Federation for Retirement Provision (EFRP).

Before joining BESTrustees, Alan worked at Willis Towers Watson for 15 years where he became a Partner and had overall responsibility for trustee training and other client facing initiatives. During this time, he was asked by the Government to lead a review regarding how UK pensions could be made simpler and more accessible. Alan’s report, ‘A Simpler Way to Better Pensions’ was published in July 2002, and continues to underpin key aspects of the UK pensions regulatory framework as well as some other fundamental industry changes in recent years.

Prior to joining Willis Towers Watson, Alan worked for 20 years with a leading moderate trade union. During that time, he was responsible for the pension scheme with which the union provided its staff and became one of the union movement’s leading pension practitioners. He worked closely with employers and trade unions during the 1970’s and 1980’s, a period of extensive and transformational change for UK pensions.

Alan has an honours degree in Politics and Social Administration.
